Kaibosh is a food rescue and redistribution charity that collects excess food from businesses and redistributes it to those in need. We support Kaibosh and its mission through our Good Impressions initiative.

Kaibosh employs a small team of staff, with over 150 volunteers who help to rescue, sort, weigh, and distribute donated food. Food is collected daily from businesses such as supermarkets and restaurants and then taken back to one of the three Kaibosh bases, where it is weighed, sorted, and packed before being allocated to community groups. Any food that is past its use-by date or is unsuitable for human consumption is given to an animal sanctuary or composted.

"Kaibosh is rescuing and distributing around 70,000 kg every month which equates to 200,000 meals worth of food getting to people who need it in the Greater Wellington Region. Since being established in 2008, we have rescued and distributed 3.4 million kg of food, which is the equivalent of 9.69 million meals worth of kai!"

Kaibosh partners with well-established community groups that offer a diverse range of wrap-around services. This partnership enables these groups to divert a significant amount of their financial resources away from the costly procurement of food, so they can concentrate on delivering their core social services. Through Kaibosh's efforts, food businesses that donate surplus food are having a positive impact on the lives of disadvantaged people in their local region, while reducing their business costs and lessening their impact on the environment.

The organisation's biggest achievement in recent times has been successfully navigating through the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite growing its capacity significantly and distributing up to three times as much food as pre-pandemic, Kaibosh has not missed a single day of food rescue and redistribution across its three sites.

“Now, that we are past the pandemic, we can get together! We know that many of our regular supporters are planning fundraising events in May, with shared kai in their workplaces, or clubs. For example, Buddle Findlay in Wellington City will bring back their regular company-wide morning tea, and our community partner Ōrongomai Marae in Upper Hutt will have a delicious hangi event as a fundraiser for Kaibosh - yum!”, continues Alex. 

The Give a Meal in May campaign is Kaibosh's annual fundraising appeal that runs throughout the month of May. This campaign helps to raise funds to support the charity's ongoing operational costs, such as keeping their food rescue EV trucks on the road and their three bases operating. The fundraising target for 2023 is to raise enough funds to provide 100,000 meals worth of food to the community. Donations towards the campaign go directly to Kaibosh, helping the charity continue its food rescue work.

The campaign includes six 'faces,' who are all real people connected closely with Kaibosh, and several of their partner community groups are featured.

“Several of our partner community groups are featured, from Wellington City, Hutt Valley and Kāpiti, plus a Kaibosh volunteer and other supporters – this is our extended Kaibosh whānau!” 

How you can Support Kaibosh

Kaibosh relies on the generous support of people and organisations to achieve its mission. There are three main ways to support Kaibosh: by giving food, donating funds, or volunteering time.

  1. Food businesses in the Greater Wellington Region can get in touch with Kaibosh to reduce waste and donate quality surplus food and private citizens can donate fresh surplus fruit and vegetable
  2. One-time or regular donations can be made through the Kaibosh website. Donations made to Kaibosh help cover operational costs and keep food rescue EV trucks on the road.
  3. Volunteering at Kaibosh is a fun way to give back to the community while reducing food waste and carbon emissions. Volunteer roles include Food Rescue at markets and supermarkets and Food Sorting at Kaibosh's three premises.
